A week today, the much-anticipated second season of TV3’s Outrageous Fortune offshoot Westside debuts, with the gang back together, this time in the garish but fabulous 80s.
Some high-profile guest stars will join the leads, Antonia Prebble (Rita) and David de Lautour (Ted) — Dean O’Gorman, Hannah Marshall, Laura Hill and Stelios Yiakmis all add to the Westie magic. It’s a welcome return to screens for Yiakmis, who was the toast of the mags in the 90s when he was married to sexy weather girl Penelope Barr.
Set in the winter of 1981 against the backdrop of the Springbok Tour, Yiakmis is virtually unrecognisable as an anti-tour leader.
This season ups the ante on the the drama. Early in the series the gang head across town to a swingers’ party in Parnell. The episode features jam-packed, x-rated scenes with bountiful boob-action (from the extras, of course), cocaine and threesome fun. Good job it’s in the 8.30pm timeslot.
Kiwi thespian Joel Tobeck returns as businessman and all-round dodgy guy, Des McEwan, who has a few strange fetishes which get him into trouble at times. Tobeck jumped into the swingers’ night with relish.
“I love doing scenes like these as they remind me why I could never be any good participating in this kind of lifestyle,” he says.
“But, as Des, I found it very easy to slip in and out of that world. It’s amazing what dirty ideas come to mind — quite easily, I’m ashamed to say — as the cameras are rolling. I loved working on this series. It was such a fantastic experience,” says Tobeck.
“Every day was fun.”
Tobeck enjoyed working with his good mate O’Gorman. The pair will be seen on our screens later this year in the Hillary drama series. Tobeck is starring in US cult horror hit Ash vs Evil Dead being filmed in West Auckland, alongside another Westside actor, Bachelor Jordan Mauger, who is part of the directing team.
