In honour of his visit, Spy suggests five presents for former US President Barack Obama, offering a little taste of New Zealand.
A Pounamu necklace by master carver Aden Hoglund. When Key met Obama in the Oval Office in 2011, he gave him a greenstone wahaika (a club used in hand-to-hand combat) carved by Hoglund, from West Coast stone. A necklace is a more personal gift to grow his collection.
2: Merino and possum
On President Clinton’s two NZ visits, he acquired garments from Christchurch brand, Untouched World in Auckland. On his second visit to the Oval Office in 2014, Key is understood to have given President Obama an Untouched World sweater with the brand’s signature bird, a symbol representing a Maori kite. Obama loved it and famously wore the dark grey merino and possum-blend pullover in 2014 as he made Thanksgiving Day calls to US troops and service members from behind his desk in the White House.
3: Protection on the golf course
A Blunt Golf G2 umbrella, is the largest, most robust sports umbrella from the New Zealand-designed range, (which sadly may be needed on the golf course). Oprah Winfrey loved hers, as did Arianna Huffington on their visits here.
4: New dancing shoes
A pair of size 12 Kathryn Wilson men’s GG Hi-Tops — nearly as cool as the man himself.
5: Don't forget Michelle
A present for the former first lady Michelle, in the form of jewellery, we note she tends to prefer gold. The Zoe & Morgan Pokhara earrings in 22k gold-plate would be perfect.
