There is a new face coming to Ferndale, though newcomer Dylan Poihipi may look familiar, as he has a special family connection to the show. At only 15, Dylan apparently nailed his audition and is now receiving advice on scripts and techniques from his real-life uncle — resident heart-throb Ben Mitchell, who has been on the show for more than a decade. Family dynasties on Shortland Street are nothing new. The Hobbs family siblings and the Magasiva brothers are among an expanse of relatives who have ended up on the show.

Poihipi, who has moved to Auckland for the role, is continuing his school work by correspondence, and says coming to Ferndale is a huge learning curve.

“There are lots of production processes and lines to learn, Luckily, I am getting some useful tips from Uncle Ben, he’s helping me heaps,” he told Spy laughing.

“I’m proud of him. He’s a lot more focused than I was at his age.” says Mitchell of his nephew.

With no previous experience, Poihipi says it wasn’t until recently that he decided to get into acting.

“I was really into my sport but decided that I wanted to try something different, take a different path, so I looked into performing arts.”

He got a role in the school production of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus and says he was hooked. In 2016 he received the Achievement Certificate for Most Improved Junior in Drama.

Though the producers are staying tight-lipped about his character, we can reveal that he is involved in a storyline that would make Justin Bieber proud.
