A flamboyant ringmaster is coming to town for the Auckland Arts Festival.
The annual event — which has more than 40 local and international events on offer this year — returns in March and promises to be the best yet. And by popular demand, the Spiegeltent tent will be back in Aotea Square.
Its R18 Blanc de Blanc show involves a lot of bare skin, breathtaking acrobatics, swinging tunes, and more than a few surprises.
The Maître d’ is the first: Monsieur Romeo, who once worked with Dita Von Teese, has a racy Instagram account.
“My Instagram is an erotic photographic project I started a few years ago. Instagram is a very narcissistic platform and I wanted to push the envelope,” Monsieur Romeo tells Spy from his base in Los Angeles.
“I have always been fascinated by the work of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. I wanted to keep that fantasy world, but in a very narcissistic way, mocking our self-centred generation. I use my body because it is the tool I know best.”
His Instagram concepts have been used by fashion brands and he is working on a coffee table book with the best of the ‘gram.
Blanc de Blanc choreographer Kevin Maher knew Monsieur Romeo’s hosting/MC work in Hollywood and introduced him to the show’s director Scott Maidment, thinking he would be perfect for the ringmaster role.
“The show starts as a sophisticated elegant Parisian party that turns very quickly into a fun, south of France-type-party, where the champagne flows and I make sure you are having the time of your life. I am the master of ceremonies and you are invited to join the party, as a VIP, of course. My character is a very Parisian, uptight, sophisticated gentleman, but turns quickly into a loose, fun character.”
This will be the second time Monsieur Romeo, (he goes by no other name,) has visited New Zealand. He has already fallen in love with our nature, and this year cannot wait to check out the arts’ scene.
