Music and fashion have gone hand in hand since the Beatles inspired the mop-top haircut, Madonna became an '80s style icon, Kurt Cobain had everyone wearing baggy jumpers, and the Spice Girls introduced us to outrageous platform boots. '

And, whether they like it or not, what an artist wears when they're performing comes under almost as much scrutiny as what they're singing about – something New Zealand's own Lorde knows all too well.

While Lorde's music and lyrics have naturally evolved from the Pure Heroine days of being just 16 years old, so too have her fashion choices. Now in her 20s, Lorde's moved on from the goth vibe and long, long hair she sported when she first came to the world’s attention.

Remember these?

seriously though, sport goth

So, let's look back at some of the major music festivals and events the singer's performed at this year in support of her second album and share a few favourite styles from this new, Melodrama-tic Lorde.

(Spoiler alert: She kills it in everything.)

Complete with braided hair, Lorde rocked this number over a black bodysuit for her set at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee.

And is it not the sheer, psychedelic jumpsuit of your dreams?

Before she closed the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards in Toronto with performances of her two singles, Green Light and Perfect Places, Lorde accepted an award for International Artist of the Year.

And she did so in a pink number that screamed Dorothy-from-Golden-Girls-on-a-fancy-night-out.

(In other words: Perfection.)

There was near fever-pitch anticipation for Lorde's performance at Coachella this year, and not only did she knock her set out of the park, but she looked a picture of glittery perfection whilst doing so.

The singer paired a nude top complete with chainmail detailing with sparkly, high-waisted culottes – an outfit only the most self-assured of pop stars could get away with.

Lorde is also one of those rare creatures who manages to make double denim look good.

(And she knows better than to turn down an opportunity to have your own album cover emblazoned across the back of your denim jacket.)

The singer was wild-haired perfection at Denmark's Roskilde festival over the weekend, too.

It suited the "fevered, conjuring the spirits-type vibe" she claimed to feel on the stage that night.

Finally, Lorde nailed the on-stage look for her Glastonbury debut last month with yet another jumpsuit – this time a long-sleeved, floral number from none other than Gucci.

We can't wait to see what she and her stylists come up with for her upcoming world tour...
