There’s been no rest over the festive season for actress Antonia Prebble, who has taken on a new role as a wedding celebrant. The talented actress had two weeks’ break from filming Series 4 of Westside, but instead of putting up her feet and relaxing she found herself working her new gig, marrying friends of her brother.
“I’d been meaning to get my licence for a few years. I really love weddings and I thought that being a celebrant could work well as a job-between-jobs, but it was last year, when friends of my brother asked if I would officiate at their wedding that served as the trigger for me to actually get on with it. Their wedding was last weekend and it went really well — with just one hitch, ha-ha”, Prebble told Spy.
After announcing her new qualifications on Instagram, 33-year-old Prebble found herself inundated with queries as to whether she’d ever be open to officiating a wedding in character as the tough Rita West.
“I’ve subsequently been asked to officiate quite a few marriages as Rita, which I think is hilarious, she would never be invited to my wedding. But I’m really excited to be able to add this string to my bow and I’m looking forward to getting a few more weddings under my belt. I’m officially open for business.”
Spy has already reported a wedding is imminent in the fourth series of Westside with Cheryl (Ashleigh Cummings) and Wolf (Reef Ireland) set to tie the knot in full Westie fashion. Perhaps Rita may officiate that 80s extravaganza?
Prebble joins an ever-increasing list of well-known NZers who have become wedding celebrants.
Shortland Street stars, Ria Vandervis and Jacqueline Nairn are also both registered to officiate at weddings and civil unions along with others such as Paul Flynn from The Hits; comedian Penny Ashton; actress Rachel Nash, and not to forget the celebrant who started them all off, former TVNZ presenter Kay Gregory.
