It's been three days since Zac Efron debuted his dreadlocks on Instagram.

And despite the accusations of cultural appropriation, the 30-year-old actor has continued to sport the grunge hairstyle.

He and brother Dylan Efron are currently embarking on another "off-the-grid" road trip, according to Instagram.

The High School Musical star came under fire immediately after posting a black and white photo of his new do.

"Just for fun," he captioned the Instagram post, which has garnered more than 1.5 million likes.

The comments from followers were a mixed bag.

One Instagram user said: "lmao take these out. This hairstyle does not belong to white people. Educate yourself and apologise." agreed: "Another white dude begging to be mixed race..."

But @rl.marmol disagreed: "Yo. It's hair. It's not that serious."

Zac, who is normally well groomed, has yet to respond to the controversy.

Meanwhile, the actor will be back on the big screen in the film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.

He plays the notorious serial killer Ted Bundy in the film, which also stars Lily Collins.
