Chris Hemsworth and friend Luke gave a backpacker a warm welcome to Australia by offering the tourist a ride - with a twist.

Chris and his friend had just touched down in Brisbane, Queensland when they spotted Scott Hildebrand attempting to hitch a ride to Byron Bay, NSW.

Filming the incident for a video later posted to the Thor star's Instagram account, Luke said: "So we've just landed in Brissie, we've just seen a guy is hitchhiking to Byron Bay. That's where we're going!"

Chris added: "We're going to Byron, we'll give him a lift!"

But the ride wasn't going to be as straightforward as it first appeared. Luke cheekily continued: "Little does he know that we're getting a chopper."

Scott, who had just arrived in Australia after a trip to Mexico, looked ecstatic about the surprising yet fortunate turn of events.

"Picked up a hitchhiker, wasn't a serial killer which we were stoked about and just happened to be a kick a** musician Scott Hildebrand," Chris captioned the clip, which he uploaded to Instagram.

Speaking to Nova 106.9's Ash, Kip & Luttsy with Susie O'Neill on Monday, Scott revealed he didn't realise he had been picked up by a star until he reached the helipad.

"I was at the airport terminal in Brisbane trying to get back to Byron and yeah, just thought I'd try and hitch hike. I'd actually never hitch hiked before," Scott told the radio show.

He explained he was just trying to 'save 50 bucks' on the fare for the two-hour bus ride from the airport to Byron and the men were 'super nice' and even asked him to go surfing with them.

"Then they were like 'Oh we're gonna do a quick stop' [and we] switched vehicles and at that point I was like 'Oh I can help pitch in for gas, it's a 2 hour drive..."

"And they're like 'You're not gonna want to do that, it's going to be like $4000 for that.' And I was like 'What is going on here, I have no idea.'"

It was that point, Scott said, that the penny dropped that he had just been given a lift from Hollywood royalty - describing the experience as 'incredible'.

Scott added that he hoped to keep in touch with Chris and that they're now following each other on Instagram.
