As Lorde teases us with snippets of her upcoming single Green Light, it’s clear the chart topper is about to enter a new era of her career – showcasing her most sophisticated music to date.
But it wasn’t so long ago, she was an aspiring artist rocking out at her local Battle of the Bands comp.
This super cute video shows Ella Yelich-O’Connor as a young rock star in the Intermediate Schools Battle of the Bands competition in 2009 where her and her band, Extreme were competing in the covers category.
They performed Man on a Silver Mountain by Rainbow and Edie (Ciao Baby) The Cult’s tribute to Andy Warhol heroine Edie Sedgwick.
Yelich-O’Connor was 12 years old at the time and sported long wavy locks and a ripped skirt but had yet to hone her signature singing style and unique dance moves.
In a post-performance interview she says “I think we brought a bit more energy on the big stage ... it really makes a big difference.”
Extreme took out third place in the competition but looking back it’s clear a star was born.
