Wondering where all the hipsters have disappeared to?

Well, in between scoffing hot cross buns and chocolate eggs over Easter, you probably caught a glimpse of them online at the Coachella festivities in California over the long weekend.

Although the Coachella Festival has been around since 1999, the last few years have seen a growing Kiwi contingent attending the event, helped in no small part this year by the fact Lorde just played a full set there (and will do so again this coming weekend).

So, with that in mind, allow us to present the Kiwi guide to Coachella.

The fashion

Forget the inevitable rain ponchos and wellies seen at that other famous music festival, Glastonbury.

Coachella means dusting off your best cut-off denim shorts, flower crowns, head chains, crop tops and anything with tassels. Lots of tassels. You'll also need to pair these with boho hair full of rainbow-coloured highlights.

Kiwis at this year's festival seemed to have got that memo, with actress and TV presenter Shavaughn Ruakere opting for a boob tube and cut-off shorts on day one. (And she chose to pair that ensemble with her best bum bag/fanny pack).

Lorde's little sister, Indy Yelich-O'Connor, got that same memo, but decided to leave the ironic-but-really-rather-handy bum bag accessory at home.

But don't let the fact that you’re not actually at Coachella deter you from busting out your best boho festival threads.

Former Bachelorette Alysha Brown debuted her best Coachella look at Auckland's Mission Bay yesterday afternoon.

The surprise performances

Anyone going to Coachella also needs to keep their eyes peeled for the famous surprise guest spots that usually litter the stages.

Lorde herself sprung a surprise on fans at last year's festival, turning up during Disclosure's set to perform their hit single, Magnets

Beyonce, who was booked to headline this year's Coachella until her baby doctors ruled it out, has busted out a couple of surprise guest spots in the past, first for her husband Jay-Z in 2010 and then again with her sister Solange in 2014.

Rihanna also brought the house down during Calvin Harris' set last year, joining him on stage for a surprise performance of their hit We Found Love. (Although Taylor Swift stole that particular show when she was pictured in the crowd making doe-eyes at then-boyfriend Harris. It gave us all massive relationship envy until they split up 12 days later.)

The squad photos

And no Coachella experience is complete without posting at least one photo of your squad to Instagram, a la Selena Gomez and a handful of Jenners a couple of years back.

Let's try that, Kiwi-style at this year's Coachella (courtesy of TV presenter and actress Jo Holley):

Lorde's family, the Yelich-O'Connors, also gave the squad shot a go (sort of) before her performance yesterday.

Hey guys, over here!

Getting around

So, how does one get to Indio, California, for Coachella?

If you're Kiwi model Georgia Fowler, it's glamour all the way.

(Don't hate them because they're beautiful. Hate them because they get to arrive at the festival via helicopter.)

Proceedings were a little less salubrious for Fowler's compatriots heading to Coachella...

Other fun facts

Did you know you can camp at Coachella? (Although we don’t imagine it's a popular option for the A-listers frequenting the festival.)

Camping options for revellers range from the basic camp-out next to your parked car, right through to the premium Safari Tents, which include air conditioning, an on-site concierge and all-important late night snacks on tap (which sounds fancier than most people's homes).

And have you heard of Nochella? As you probably guessed by the title, it's a bit of fun for those who were either too poor or not fast enough to snap up Coachella tickets (or couldn't access them from little old New Zealand). Nochella revellers head along to Indio and Palm Springs anyway and try their luck in crashing some festival after-parties.

And if you're more 'Nochella' than 'Coachella', do remember to poke gentle fun at not getting amongst the action. We'll let Mindy Kaling, Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer show you how that’s done...

Off to coachella! Jk guys dust, live music, and chokers ...that might kill me ☠
