Survivor New Zealand season two contestant Tara Thorowgood entered the show dealing with very fresh personal grief, after losing her father just five weeks before filming.

The 44-year-old mother - the oldest contestant this season - had already lost her mother to breast cancer eight years ago.

"Emotionally the hardest thing [I've experienced] is both my mother and father have passed away, so that's pretty hard," she told Spy in an interview.

"My dad died five weeks before I came here... I'm trying to detatch myself from it - that's probably why I'm crying now, because I've been trying not to think about it."

Thorowgood is a mother of three children who also runs a charity that distributes second-hand household items to families in need.

Survivor New Zealand season two premieres 7pm, Sunday April 22 on TVNZ2.
