Sonny Bill Williams has tweeted "surgery was successful" from his hospital bed after a operation on his ruptured Achilles tendon in Auckland yesterday.
It's understood leading Auckland surgeon Dr Bruce Twaddle performed the surgery on Williams.
Williams was pushed off his long haul flight back from Rio on Sunday morning in a wheelchair by fellow All Black and sevens player Liam Messam.
Messam also joked he returned early from Rio so Williams "has somebody to push the bro around" but added it was good to be back in New Zealand.
Williams suffered his injury in his first match in the Olympic rugby sevens tournament and is expected to be sidelined for six to nine months.
