Shaun Johnson is not just a star on the rugby league field — he is set to become a star in the street fashion world.
Like global sporting superstars David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Le Bron James, he has launched his own fashion line.
Two weeks ago the handsome halfback launched the first of his SJ range — SJ New Era caps, priced from $59-$69 — at ultra-cool streetwear site Threadsonline.co.nz, which also has stores in Ponsonby and Newmarket called Needles and Threads, stocking labels including Huffer and Represent. The caps sold out within 48 hours.
“What was particularly interesting to me was seeing that we sold units to customers in Australia and France,” said Threads owner Hadley Pegden, “which puts into perspective the social media reach of Shaun and ourselves.”
Now the caps are back in store, along with the rest of his range, including T-shirts and shorts.
Johnson is in the UK, competing with the Kiwis in the Four Nations and visited Scotland’s Edinburgh Castle with his teammates this week. On Thursday night his biggest supporter, Kayla Cullen attended the Tiffany & Co launch at Britomart and told Spy she was very proud of his fashion effort.
If he and the Kiwis take out the final we reckon his range will become big business here and overseas.
