Simon Barnett is quitting breakfast radio, it was announced yesterday. But why?
Mediaworks made the shock announcement, confirming Barnett would leave More FM after more than 20 years, and take up a position at Newstalk ZB in 2019.
But buried in the press release was a comment from the Dancing with the Stars dad-bod champ that revealed exactly why he's leaving his on-air partner Gary McCormick.
And it has nothing to do with the controversial Tom Cruise prank pulled on Barnett by The Edge.
Instead, Barnett is simply over the early starts. He wants to enjoy some sleep-ins.
"The answer is straight forward, no 'Smoking Gun'," said Barnett.
"I have done breakfast radio for 26 years and I just do not have the inclination, desire and passion to keep going beyond the end of 2018.
"I find getting up at 4.30am every morning less and less palatable and even though I am quite possibly the world’s most boring person I would like to have a social life again."
Fans took to Facebook to comment on Barnett's departure, saying, "mornings won't be the same without him," and, "He's been a great way to start the day".
Barnett's role at Newstalk ZB is yet to be confirmed.
He said he was announcing his exit 18 months out to "allow MediaWorks the greatest amount of time to find my replacement".
