Prime Minister Bill English has revealed that his real name isn’t actually Bill.
During a Q&A session with ZM’s Fletch, Vaughan and Megan he disclosed his real name is – wait for it - Simon.
“I am really Simon William English,” he told the ZM hosts, before explaining why he went by the name ‘Bill’.
“I am from a really big family … I am the tenth or twelfth (child) and my parents always used to have vigorous discussions about names for the children and when they got to me they had a difference of opinion,” he said.
“My father wanted to call me Bill and my mother wanted to call me Simon and so they had a compromise where she got the first name and then Bill just kind of became the nickname.”
English’s father was persistent from day one, and the name Bill seems to have stuck!
