She might be back playing a hard-nosed businesswoman on Filthy Rich this week, but Spy can reveal Miriama Smith has landed a very different role on top NZ/Aussie drama 800 Words.
The actress plays Ngahuia, an ex-flame of notorious ladies’ man Zac and the mother of Ike, played by her Filthy Rich co-star Alex Tarrant. The role will take her to a whole new audience in Australia.
Smith, 41, says joining the 800 Words cast for Series 3 has been a bit of a reunion.
“I knew most of the NZ-based actors already, either from my time on Shortland Street or through various projects I have worked on. It was so nice to see so many familiar faces as well as meet some new ones. It’s a fun and friendly crew,” she told Spy.
She was also reunited with Erik Thomson: “It’s always a pleasure working with Erik. The last time we worked together was 10 years ago on a movie called We’re Here to Help, where I played his girlfriend. Erik is a hardworking, humble actor who brings a wealth of experience to the table.”
It’s been a busy year for the talented actress, with back-to-back roles.
“My first day on-set for 800 Words was the morning straight after the Filthy Rich wrap party, so it was a quiet party for me given I had a 6.30am call-time at Piha beach the next day . . . no rest for the wicked!”
Landing the role means Smith will be seen by an audience upwards of a million per episode in Australia and New Zealand.
