Sex toys on the telly have become trendy of late — but only Kiwi acting legend Jennifer Ward-Lealand could make them seem as normal as a Tupperware party.
The 53-year-old Dirty Laundry matriarch also lent her acting talents to playing a sex shop worker in the second season of the popular TVNZ OnDemand series Auckward Love. The show looks at the madcap single lives of four Auckland girls.
Director Emmett Skilton, who is set to marry the show’s creator/writer and star Holly Shervey at the end of this year, told Spy he had successfully approached the Peaches and Cream love shop on K Rd in which to film, but needed the right actress to sell sex toys.
“Jennifer Ward-Lealand was the person who popped into all our heads. But, as we were considering one of New Zealand’s most well-known and successful actresses to play a Peaches and Cream manager, approaching Jennifer came with some trepidation. Knowing she had played at least one very risque character in the past on Auckland Daze (another TVNZ OnDemand hit), we knew we had to ask.
“To our surprise, she not only jumped at the idea, she immediately suggested script changes that made the whole scene even funnier.
“What Jennifer successfully did for our storytelling was make sex shops something very normal and everyday, completely taking away the taboo and actually making the experience hilariously funny and enjoyable.”
