Kiwi actor Ido Drent is back on screens this Thursday on season six of TV One’s Offspring, about the life and loves of Nina, played by wonderful Aussie actress Asher Keddie.
Drent’s character, Lawrence Pethbridge, arrived on the show in season four. At first fans thought he was a love interest for Nina, who started obsessing over the hot young counsellor during her sessions with him.
Last season, Nina’s sister Billie, (Kat Stewart) started seeing Lawrence professionally after her marriage fell apart. The two bonded and Lawrence fell for Billie — he was heartbroken when Billie went back to her husband.
This season opens 18 months later. Lawrence is in Nina’s delivery room, getting ready to have his first child with his new wife.
Drent had parallels to draw from as he and wife Mandy have a 1-year-old baby boy.
"It’s life imitating art in Offspring this season as Lawrence welcomes his first child into the world. The scene reminded me of when Mandy and I had Bastion," Drent told Spy.
"My wife, played by Katherine Hicks, did an incredible job summoning the primal sounds I remember from our birth. It was actually incredible. A little scary, but incredible. I remember the hospital (Auckland City Hospital) very well, and the stress, but also the amazing feeling of becoming a dad for the first time, so it’s great that Lawrence is getting to experience that. Mandy and I are looking forward to doing it all over again in November when No. 2 arrives," he said.
The St Heliers-based family are about to start building a home on Auckland’s North Shore for their growing brood. They have been spending time in LA too, as Drent networks in Hollywood.
At the end of next month Drent will be travelling to Thailand with Tearfund to look at prevention programmes that help to combat human trafficking.
