Prime Minister Bill English joined Leigh and Jase on Hauraki’s Bhuja show and they grilled (or perhaps fried) him on the big issues… like how to make the best bacon sandwich.

“It’s great to be here” said English, before the hosts launched into one of the most shambolic interviews on record.

After struggling to establish when exactly the election is taking place, Leigh Hart put the Prime Minister through his paces, asking him to describe his perfect bacon sandwich.

“Are we talking white bread, brown bread… is there sauce in there, is there butter?” the host asked.

English was firm in his response: “If there’s bread, there’s got to be butter. I’m not into this bread without butter thing.”

“Actually I’ve become a bit of a brown bread kind of guy… but it’s all about getting the bacon crisp… the fat has got to be hot.”

According to Hart, people following the livestream agreed with the PM’s choices.

“I know my people” quipped Bill.

The PM continued to say he “doesn’t do avocado” and the “bacon will have to be fried because it takes too long to grill”.

“I’m not a chef,” concluded English.

We have to admit, it does sound bloody delicious!

Bill English’s official Bacon Sandwich recipe:

  • 2 x brown bread
  • Crispy bacon
  • Butter
  • Sauce (BBQ or tomato)
