Katie Holmes and Cuba Gooding Jr play a big role in Air New Zealand's new safety video - a role about as big as they get.

The pair, known for starring in big budget Hollywood film and TV roles, kick off the video, dubbed 'Fantastical Journey', which launched this morning.

Over a dreamy soundtrack by Gin Wigmore, the pair appear to play Gods, naming countries around the world, until they get to New Zealand.

They call the country "the most beautiful place we've created yet".

The national carrier confirmed the celebs' appearance yesterday after posting a series of behind-the-scenes clips to social media.

In a behind-the-scenes clip, Gooding Jr praised Wigmore's voice, saying: "It's melodic, it's enchanting, it's soothing - it's exactly what you need for a long-distance flight".

Holmes said "everyone I meet from New Zealand is so lovely (and) so thoughtful ... I've had a great time".

The clip is hosted by flight attendants Kobi and Josh.

Air New Zealand General Manager of Global Brand and Content Marketing Jodi Williams said the new video was built to showcase more of New Zealand to the world.

"Following the success of our last safety video Summer of Safety which was shot in Northland and has had more than 7.6 million views, we wanted to showcase more of our country's cities and regions in our next safety video instalment to help encourage visitors to those areas and drive economic benefit," she said.

"Our safety videos have earned a global reputation so it'll be great to have eyes from around the world on more of our stunning landscapes and attractions."

Air NZ is known for nabbing big name stars for its high profile safety videos that air before takeoff.

Recent clips have used Bear Grylls, Sports Illustrated swimsuit models, Richard Simmons and Rachel Hunter.

Collectively, the clips have generated more than 108 million views.
